How does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu differ from other martial arts?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu differs from "traditional" martial arts such as karate and kung fu, in two major ways. The first difference is that "traditional" martial arts primarily focus on striking with the feet and hands. While Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art, similar to wrestling, that employs throws, and submission holds such as chokes and joint locks. The other difference is effectiveness. Because of the martial arts use of leverage and technique Brazilian Jiu Jitsu enables smaller practitioners to best much larger opponents. As proven by the Gracie Family, the creators of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the most effective martial art for self defense.
